Our history
In the early days of the gas industry, Elster American Meter produced the first gas meter in the U.S. enabling utilities to earn revenues based on gas consumption. That first state-of-art meter in the 1830's had a tin case that wouldn't hold up well outdoors. Since those early days, we've developed a number of improvement and new technologies that make gas measurement more efficient and more productive for our customers. We evolved that first meter's tin case into a cast iron case, and finally to an aluminum case, so that meters could operate dependably in any outdoor environment. Elster American Meter led the way to more accurate gas measurement with a new synthetic, diaphragm material that improved the diaphragm's ability to withstand different gas compositions, enhancing meter performance.
