| Dear Deborah,
Elster American Meter, the world's leading manufacturer and supplier of gas measurement and control products for the natural gas and propane industries, will kick off its 175 year anniversary in January 2011. As Elster Gas North America wraps up the end of 2010, we will begin promoting our 175 years of commitment to the natural gas industry as well as sharing fun facts with you in regards to the natural gas industry.
FUN FACT
In February 1836, the first municipal-owned facility opened in Philadelphia and customers were being serviced at 35 cents per 100 cu ft. The board of the Philadelphia Gas Works reported "notwithstanding the desires of the trustees to provide meters of American manufacture, they found themselves obligated to resort again to England for this year's supply." The flow of gas meters from England brought with it a number of individuals skilled in the maintenance and manufacture of such meters. One of these was a young immigrant named Samuel Down. He went to work at the Manhattan Gas Light Co., where his skill attracted such favorable attention that Down's employer suggested he start his own meter business. This enterprise became the American Meter Co., an organization that would establish a continuous 175 year history of supplying instrumentation for gas measurement. Down began making meter parts, then complete meters. He soon gained the business of his old employer plus that of other gas companies in the United States and Canada.

Applications Notes |
Regulator Safety Devices Elster American Meter offers a vast array of natural gas regulator safety devices to meet the varying demands of today's market place. The most common and simple form of protection is an internal relief valve that vents gas to the atmosphere if the downstream pressure exceeds a predetermined set point. Internal relief valves are designed to be a cost-effective and reliable mechanism to mitigate excessive downstream pressure build up that may be harmful to piping systems or equipment. Other types of available safety devices are designed to shut off gas flow completely in the event of an emergency. These may be used independently, or in conjunction with, internal relief valves to act as a primary or secondary safety device. Shut off devices are designed to prevent gas from venting to the atmosphere when used as a primary safety device. The OPSO (over-pressure shut-off) will completely shutdown the flow of gas in the event of a high pressure downstream condition. The UPSO (under-pressure shut-off) will completely shut down the flow of gas in the event of a low pressure upstream condition. The USSA (universal safety shut-off assembly combines the OPSO and UPSO functionality to provide both over- and under-pressure shutoff capability in one device.
A Simple Solution for Freezing Vents
Weather conditions can have a serious impact on natural gas equipment. When the weather turns cold, melting snow or freezing rain can cause regulator vents to freeze shut, which can prevent the regulators diaphragm chamber from breathing, creating a potentially hazardous condition. Elster Gas Depot Splashguards offer a simple solution for freezing vents. This effective solution is rugged and can be easily installed in the field or at the factory. Splashguards protect the vent screen from splashes and provide a large venting area to keep regulators working effectively, protecting the equipment and the customer. Click Here to learn more |
